Pick a low or middle-income country and familiarize yourself in more detail with its development trajectory and politics. This entails doing additional readings (academic journal articles, books, research reports) and following news stories (e.g. read a local English language newspaper). You will then be required to write a report, drawing on your country expertise. The memo will cover most of the major topics covered in class (listed below) from your country’s perspective. Each topic should be discussed for about 1-2 pages. Draw on the required readings for the topics and additional sources you identified. Please cite your sources properly. The report is due no later than midnight (4/27). I highly encourage you to work on your country report throughout the semester. It will be easiest if you simply write up each section after each corresponding week. Late submissions will only receive 50% of the credit. Prepare accordingly. If you are running into trouble, for whatever reason, please reach out to me before the submission deadline. I am also happy to provide feedback on your draft throughout the semester. Please submit your report via the Carmen dropbox. The report will help you to get more out of the readings and lectures. Each report should have a section on each of the following elements:
– Introduction & Development Statistics
∗ This section provides basic facts and information for your country. Draw on our debate on measuring development and official statistics to describe the country’s current state and history of development.
– Five additional substantive sections (Pick 5 of the 7 topics below):
Institutions and Historical Legacies
The Role of the State
The memo should be at most 12 pages long (not including the reference list at the end). Please format your memo in 12pt-font, with 1.5 spacing, 1-inch margins, and references formatted in APSA-style.
The report will be graded with the following criteria in mind:
Did you provide key background information about the topic for your country of choice and explain it clearly?
Did your discussion of the issue engage relevant theoretical and empirical debates we covered in class?
Did you cite proper references and bring in additional literature?
