This assignment is designed to give you practice in reading and interpreting critical articles about the texts and films we are discussing for this class. It will allow you to review, summarize, critique and engage with three scholarly texts. Your paper will need to be 4-5 pages, and you will need to discuss how three pieces of criticism work in relation to one another.
Your scholarly articles can focus on horror and some of its major themes (such as body-horror, trauma, and social criticism––like the articles we’ve read together); they can focus on either Hill House or one of the films we have watched; or it can focus on a classic horror film we have not watched in class (such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Exorcist, Psycho, Carrie, Alien, Halloween, Dawn of the Dead, etc.) that has a large body of critical work written about it.
The review should contain the following information:
- An introductory paragraph that gives a brief overview of the three articles and your argument how they can be read together (including thesis)
- A summary of each article’s argument (this should be the majority of your paper)
- A brief critique of each article’s argument, designed to help someone who might be considering using it in an academic essay. Include the article’s strength and weaknesses. For what type of academic essay might it be most helpful? What might limit its usefulness as a source for an academic essay? This is how you should develop your thesis.
The main objective is for you to summarize the main points of each article (using important quotes), critique them, and then explain their usefulness for different types of papers.
