Covid-19 has shown that we are vulnerable to external shocks by depending mainly on global supply chains. This paper is aimed at investigating sustainable ways the European Union could intensify its post-pandemic response. The study will provide European best practices on responding to the Covid-19 pandemic to support EU citizens, businesses, and countries recovering from the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
By promoting local and regional economies in typically marginalised areas, the resilience of such economies become enhanced, hence becoming less vulnerable to external shocks that are likely to occur more often asa result of climate change. Europe’s commitment to accelerate efforts regarding climate change adaptation towards attaining climate neutrality and resilience by 2050 is emphasized in the European Green Deal. This commitment will be further supported by the European economic recovery plan from the COVID-19 pandemic, which has highlighted the lack of resilience in the current systems.
