Purpose: To explore why Earth experiences seasons and why we see phases of the moon.

Astronomy Lab Part 1: Why does Earth experience seasons?

All you have to do is open the link, answer the questions, and then right the analysis for each part there are 2 parts in total. It should only be around 4 paragraphs total with a total of 2 APA citations for the questions in red below. 1 for each question in red.

Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the different components of this interactive animation.

o At the top left of your screen, you should see a diagram of Earth’s orbit around the sun. You can change the location of the Earth on its orbit by clicking on the blue circles on the orbit.
o In the lower right corner of the page is a diagram showing the angle of sunlight that hits Earth as well as Sun’s path at that time of year at that latitude.
o Finally, below the orbit window, you should see an image of the landscape at that same latitude at the time of year on the orbit window for the four cities of New York, Miami, Singapore, and Melbourne.

  1. Answer the following questions.

a) Click on the December blue circle on the Earth’s orbit. Looking at the landscape view, describe what is happening in Singapore around that time of the year.

b) Click on the December blue circle on the Earth’s orbit. Looking at the landscape view, mention the name of the season in Melbourne.

c) Click on the September blue circle on the Earth’s orbit. Describe the sunlight angle for an Observer in Miami. Is the sunlight angle to the right of the Observer or to the left?

d) Click on the September blue circle on the Earth’s orbit. Describe the sunlight angle for an Observer in Melbourne. Is the sunlight angle to the right of the Observer or to the left?

e) Click on the December blue circle on the Earth’s orbit. Which of the four cities have the highest position of the Sun in sky in December?

f) Click on the March blue circle on the Earth’s orbit. Is Sun’s position in sky higher in New York or in Miami?

Analysis: Many people believe that seasons on Earth are caused by Earth being closest to the sun in summer and farthest from the sun in winter. o An observer is positioned on the surface of Earth. For all of the activities below, you are to pay attention to what the observer can see. The observer can only see what is above him/her in the sky.
o On the top left part of your screen is a view of the landscape for that observer on the surface of Earth.
o To the right of the landscape panel is the time and date (time since new moon”..
