Instructions: Choose one of the following questions. Answer it with an essay. This essay should be about 3 pages long, double spaced, and should not exceed 5 pages (that is, between 700-1,250 words).
Excellent essays will draw on the readings and interpret specific passages. They will show knowledge of the arguments presented in the text, as well as provide thoughtful answers to the question chosen.
Good essays will be ones that present familiarity with the arguments of the texts, but still base their answers on a reading of the texts (that is, they at least support their thesis with specific passages).
Both will be well organized and adhere to proper grammar and style. Average and unsatisfactory essays will be ones that either do not engage meaningfully with the texts studied, fail to show at least a general understanding of the arguments discussed, do not answer the questions, are disorganized or incoherent, or are difficult to understand due to lack of grammar. Base your answers on the assigned readings alone.
2. Compare and contrast Socrates’ argument for doing his duty even in the face of certain death (in the Apology and the Crito) to Antigone’s arguments for burying her brother despite her uncle’s decree in Sophocles’ play of the same name.
Do they base their claims on a similar basis?
Are their respective positions about politics and the law of the city at odds with each other?
