ASSIGNMENT DETAILS – Develop a personal teaching statement that outlines your position and commitment to Indigenous education as a beginning teacher.

The aim of this Part of the assignment is for you to show your knowledge of complex ideas and concepts in Indigenous education.
This part of the assignment primarily addresses the first criterion in the rubric:
Indigenous education: Demonstrates knowledge of complexities in Indigenous education (30 marks)
Which in turn provides evidence against ULO 1:
Demonstrating comprehensive professional knowledge and understanding ofrecent developments in the fields of curriculum, teaching, and learning;specifically, complex ideas and concepts about Indigenous education (CLO1).
We assume that you are at the very start of your degree and we assume that you do not have classroom teaching experience. What you are writing about is what you see as your future role. As a teacher, you need to meet APSTs 1.4 and 2.4 which means that you need to show your capability and commitment to this area.
This is a personal exploration with an evidence base: use the word ā€˜Iā€™ and support your positions with appropriate scholarly support. Engage with scholarly literature to provide a critical understanding of Indigenous education and your role within it.
This is an exploration of who you are, and how you envision your role in Indigenous education. Everyone’s statement will therefore be unique. Write from your perspective but use scholarly literature to show you understand important ideas in Indigenous education. 
Your statement should:
Describe your understanding of Indigenous education and your role as ateacher in Indigenous education.
This allows you to show you understand what is meant by ‘Indigenous education’ and how teachers work in this space; you have the opportunity to convey nuanced and insightful understandings for higher marks.
Explain your cultural position and how this shapes your interactions inIndigenous education.
We explore culture and how it intersects with society and education practices in this unit, which will allow you to be able to define who you are, culturally, and what this means for your work in Indigenous education. There is a personal element to this as we are each of us unique beings, but there is also literature and theoretical concepts that you can draw on as references that you can use to analyse and shed light on your cultural position. 
The theoretical landscape might draw on the cultural interface, white privilege, critical race theory, navigation of discourses eg strengths-based, culturally-responsive pedagogy.
Provide evidence of your knowledge of Australian history and how it shapes your future practice in Indigenous education.
We would like you to take a longer view of your role in Indigenous education. We are all of us products of history and while it is often easy to see how First Nations people have been disadvantaged, it can be harder to see how some segments of society have been advantaged by Australia’s particular history. What can you say about First Nations peoples’ past and present experiences of education, and the role of teachers, past and present? What does this mean for your future practice?

What we’re looking for here is your ability to situate your future practice in the informing document landscape! This will change over time so part of the skill is being able to navigate the layers and changes.
We do not expect you to engage with every single one of these documents! You can show your overall breadth of knowledge, or perhaps in-depth knowledge of one or two documents. Demonstrate that you recognise the multiple layers of imperatives that you are responding to.

Identify and navigate complex ideas and concepts in Indigenous education.
As you write, identify complexities in Indigenous education and show how you will work with or through these in your future practice. This is probably not going to be a separate section in your Teaching statement; it is more likely you will be able to identify and explore complex ideas and concepts throughout your statement.
