Conduct a close analysis of two or three primary sources relating to one of the following films:
Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
The Conversation (1974)
Star Wars (1977)
You may use materials that we have discussed in the seminars and/or find your own sources using digital archives such as the Entertainment Industry Archive, the New York Times, etc.
Relevant sources include reviews, interviews, newspaper and trade press reports, advertisements, press releases, trailers, and behind-the-scenes materials. These should date from (roughly) the same time as the film’s release.
The essay should focus on a detailed analysis of your chosen sources, but it should also use relevant academic texts to frame the analysis conceptually and historically.
You should integrate the analyses into a coherent whole, making connections and comparisons between your sources where appropriate.
You may wish to analyse one specific type of material (e.g. three reviews; two advertisements) or look at different kinds of sources, but make sure that they are connected by a unifying idea or theme.
