Emerging Trends: Designing for Agility and Innovation
One of the most critical issues facing organizations is keeping up with digitization of the workplace. The reality confronting organizations is increasingly complex. Many leaders, who were trained when organizational structure was simpler, are hampered with outdated skills.
Organization design must evolve along with the organization and its leadership to support adaptive and innovative workplaces.
Let us look at trends in organization structure using the class text and, predominately, articles from the PDF attachment s full-text Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete, research organization structure. Do not use any quotations.

Upon successful completion of this module, the student will be able to satisfy the following outcomes:
- Apply principles of strategic and project planning to a managerial situation.
- Apply the function of managerial control in a real-world setting.
- A two-page paper with APA citations (2- or 3-sentence introduction, body, 2-sentence conclusion)
In this module you will learn about organizational mission and goals, as well as about the strategic planning process. In this module, we will also examine planning tools such as SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis that managers use when assessing internal and external factors that influence plans and affect their success. This module also studies the control function: the process for ensuring that (1) goals are carefully defined in terms of measurability and timing, (2) performance, or progress toward achieving goals, is both adequately influenced and measured, and (3) the causes of variances from goals are understood and needed corrective actions are identified and implemented.
Let’s start with the concept of strategy. Why is it important? How do strategies differ depending on organizational size? How are they affected by internal and external circumstances? The case provides the opportunity to prepare an actual SWOT analysis.
Then we turn to the actual planning process, which covers overall strategies and specific projects and tactics – steps taken to carry out strategies and achieve objectives. Both the case and discussion questions provide the opportunity to engage in the planning process.
Finally, we will turn to control. Some see control as the distinct, back end of the planning process, while others believe that control processes need to be integrated into plans. As we establish goals and objectives, we want to make sure that their achievement is enabled, that measurement protocols are established, and that provisions are made for taking any corrective action if and when objectives are not met. This is the subject of this module’s Discussion assignment.
In covering this subject, we will also give some specific attention to financial controls, quality control and assurance, productivity, and the use of scorecards for tracking performance.
