Pain has a powerful impact on human feelings and behavior.The severity of pain affects an individual’s work productivity. Psychological, physical, and psychosocial challenges cause musculoskeletal disorders among nurses. Chronic lower back pain is the most common musculoskeletal disorder affecting the quality of life and activities of daily living.People suffering from this type of pain have to seek medical help, increasing absenteeism at work.Yoga is an emerging non-pharmacological method of pain management. It is an essential topic in the nursing practice as it can be applied to groups with chronic pains, the nursing population, and (fibromyalgia) FM patients.
How Pain Affects the Quality of Life and Activities of Daily Living
Pain is a highly noxious experience that negatively affects the quality of life.It affects an individual’s productivity at work in daily life.Thus, pain is a determinant of health and quality of life lived. For instance, nurses suffer from chronic lower back pain, a musculoskeletal disorder that negatively affects the quality of life(Patil et al., 2018). A nurse is an important player in the health care profession, and when one experiences pain, there is reduced productivity and absenteeism.
Nurses suffer from low back pain when attending to patients through carrying and repositioning patients on the bed, night shifts, and carrying and transporting patients, especially in developing countries lacking lifting aids(Patil et al., 2018). The low back pain causes nurses to go on early retirement due to reduced work speed and sickness. Low back pain also affects the activities of daily living as when the nursing population goes on early retirement; they may develop disabilities which calls for increased dependency and a rise in health care costs. The common symptoms of musculoskeletal conditions such as pain and fatigue lead to Activities of Daily living problems.
Characteristics of Yoga
Yoga incorporates physical postures, relaxation, and breathing techniques. It is a treatment that has been incorporated into the American culture to improve health outcomes. For instance, Musculoskeletal disorders among the population can be improved through yoga to help increase endorphin levels that decrease stress and pain(Singh, 2016).Various yoga styles focus on physical and mental practices, such as Ashtanga and Iyengar yoga. The Ashtanga yoga style focuses on the training of the muscle and the development of physical strength. Practicing the yoga style helps in rejuvenating one’s body, making it more flexible. The Iyengar Yoga focuses on the alignmentof the physical body, helping one strengthen muscles of the body responsible for posture.
Health Benefits of Yoga
Yoga is a therapeutic and non-pharmacological treatment of chronic lower back and neck pain that focuses on pain and quality of life problems. Patients with chronic nonspecific neck pain most prevalent among adolescents are characterized by persistent neck pain for over three months (Li et al., 2019). Mechanical changes and poor posture cause chronic neck pain. Yoga is a recommended medicine therapy for neck pains. Yoga styles, such as the Iyengar yoga and Ashtanga, helps in correcting pains as they focus on physical postures(Singh, 2016).Various yoga styles can relieve chronic lower back pain, improving patients’ wellbeing and restoring normal functioning.
Purpose of the Study
The study aimed at identifying non-pharmacological methods of pain management among patients. Nurses are also affected by chronic lower back pain in their workplace. Besides, pharmacological treatments have been used over the years but fail to fully address pain among patients.
Exploratory research methods focusing on peer-reviewed literature searches were conducted. The college library helped search electronic databases such as the journal of pain research, PubMed, Medline, and Cinahl. From the search results, Patil et al. (2018) study was found to have empirical research on yoga application in pain management. The study used a randomized trial on patients experiencing chronic lower back pain. The sample was split into two treatment groups, where one group was subjected to yoga and the other physical exercise. Other search results provided a literature review approach to the topic but offered critical insight to this study
Pain affects an individual’s behavior and work productivity. Yoga therapy is a recommendable non-pharmacological pain manager among patients.Yoga therapy to manage chronic pains among nurses reduces cases of early retirement among nurses. Adolescents who mostly experience chronic nonspecific neck pains caused by poor posture and mechanical changes can be corrected through yoga. The study proved yoga’s efficacy in decreasing pain among FM patients who were willing to engage in the activity.Yoga therapy also proves a better option than physical exercises in improving the physical, psychosocial, and social health domains among nursing professionals with chronic lower back pain. There is a need for incorporating Yoga to intervene in the individual’s lifestyle in pain management.
Application to Nursing Practice
Yoga in pain management is a crucial topic in the application of nursing practice.Society finds itself amidst rising treatment costs and mortality rates. Despite the increased use of treatments of pains in the nursing career, chronic pain persists and disables many individuals,including the nurse population (Schmid et al., 2019). As nurses go early retirement due to increased chronic pains, the health sector undergoes a shortage of nurses leading to a cycle that causes the nurses in the health care system to take the same cycle.Nurses play a pivotal role in monitoring pain; therefore, it is a compelling topic of yoga for pain management. Nurses can participate in different yoga styles to relieve stress and pain accumulated from the night shifts and the physical strains they find in the workplace.
Chronic pain results from physical, social, and physiological factors. Thus, non-pharmacological approaches are more effective as they target both the body and mind. Chronic pain is coupled with emotional responses to physical pain, causing a disconnect between the body and mind. Yoga can be used in different groups in nursing, such as patients with chronic pains and patients with fibromyalgia (Lazaridou et al., 2019). Yoga therapy has been proved to improve fibromyalgia symptoms in the nursing practice as (fibromyalgia) FM patients suffer from sleep disturbances caused by pain severity.
