Topic: Was the partition of India the result of loss of commitment to Empire?

This assessment will test students’ knowledge and understanding of the changing ideas and responses to Empire. A range of questions, from which students select one, will be provided by tutors. Students will gain credit for breadth of reference across the primary and secondary sources employed on the module. On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

1. Show understanding and appreciation of the nature of Empire and in particular of the British Empire in relation to European Empires.

2. Demonstrate an appreciation of the role of empire and colonial others in constructing ideas of race and identity.

3. Show detailed understanding of the importance of India as a British colony and the interrelationship of gender race and identity.

4. Critically analyse a range of primary sources to explore the complexities of Victorian responses to Empire.
